Navigating Menopause: Expert Relief Strategies and Treatment Options

Menopause is a natural transition, but its symptoms can feel overwhelming. Hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes often disrupt your daily life. At Sarasota OB/GYN Associates, we believe you do not have to navigate this phase alone.

Our team, led by Dr. Wayne A. Cohen, provides compassionate menopause management across Florida. We serve patients in Sarasota, Port Charlotte, Bradenton, and Venice. We tailor our care to your unique body and health history.

Is hormone replacement therapy safe for you?

Yes, hormone replacement therapy is highly safe and effective for most healthy women in early menopause. For healthy women starting treatment before age 60, a 2022 guideline in Menopause shows that serious risks are rare. Specifically, the guideline defines rare risks as fewer than 10 additional cases per 10,000 women each year.

Systemic hormone replacement therapy works by restoring your body’s natural estrogen levels. This helps stabilize your brain’s internal thermostat to stop hot flashes. If you still have your uterus, we combine estrogen with progesterone to protect your uterine lining.

We offer multiple delivery options, including oral tablets and transdermal patches. Transdermal patches deliver estrogen directly through the skin, bypassing the liver to lower blood clot risks. We will help you weigh these options at our offices in Sarasota, Port Charlotte, Bradenton, or Venice, FL.

What are the best non-hormonal treatment options?

If you cannot take hormones, several highly effective prescription and local therapies can provide relief. For example, a new non-hormonal daily pill called elinzanetant targets the brain’s temperature center directly. In a 2024 study in JAMA of 796 postmenopausal women, elinzanetant reduced hot flashes by about 3.2 per day compared with a placebo.

If your primary concern is vaginal dryness or painful intercourse, local treatments are an excellent choice. The American Urological Association announced that the FDA removed the black box warning on low-dose vaginal estrogen in 2025. This decision confirms that these localized treatments do not carry the systemic risks of oral hormone pills.

At our practice, we also offer comprehensive gynecology services to address these intimate health concerns safely.

How we personalize your menopause care
