In Office Surgery Q & A

What are the available in-office surgeries?

Sarasota OB/GYN Associates offers a variety of minimally invasive, in-office surgical procedures with the help of a board-certified anesthesiologist. Two of the most common surgeries are NovaSure endometrial ablation and MyoSure.

NovaSure endometrial ablation

NovaSure endometrial ablation is an effective treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding. It’s a one-time treatment that only takes five minutes to remove your uterine lining.

Your provider begins by confirming that you’re not pregnant and then injects a local anesthetic into your cervix and uterus. They insert the NovaSure device through your cervix and into your uterus.

NovaSure uses radiofrequency energy to heat your uterine lining. The heat damages the tissue, which prevents future bleeding. NovaSure ends your fertility and is only appropriate if you don’t want any more children.

MyoSure

MyoSure is a minimally invasive procedure to remove fibroids, polyps, and other abnormal intrauterine tissue. Depending on your individual condition, your treatment could be over in as little as 10 minutes.

During the procedure, your provider opens your cervix and inserts a slender camera into your uterus that allows them to see any abnormal growths. Then, they insert the MyoSure wand into your uterus and carefully cut away any fibroids or polyps.

When the procedure is complete, your provider removes the device and you can go home to recover.

How should I prepare for in-office surgery?

Sarasota OB/GYN Associates gives you personalized instructions on how to prepare for your in-office surgery. For example, if you take blood thinners you might need to stop taking them for several days before your procedure.

You might want to ask a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment. If you need anesthesia, you will be sleepy after your procedure. Even if you don’t need general anesthesia, you might have some discomfort or cramping and prefer that someone else drive you home.

What should I expect after in-office surgery?

Sarasota OB/GYN Associates provides personalized aftercare instructions before releasing you. They might recommend over-the-counter anti-inflammatories to reduce any discomfort. You should be able to return to your regular activities within a couple of days.
