Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section Q & A

Why should I consider a vaginal birth after cesarean section?

Vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) is a choice for women who want to experience a natural delivery. Many women deliver healthy babies vaginally after having one or more C-sections.

A natural delivery has some advantages over a repeat C-section, including:

  • Shorter, easier recovery
  • No scarring
  • Reduced risk of surgical complications

If you’re considering a vaginal birth after cesarean section for an upcoming delivery, make an appointment at Sarasota OB/GYN Associates to find out if you’re a candidate.

Who is a candidate for a vaginal birth after cesarean section?

Vaginal births after cesarean section aren’t right for every woman. A VBAC may be appropriate if you’re pregnant with just one baby and previously had one or two low transverse C-sections.

If you’re pregnant with one baby and previously had one other type of C-section (except high vertical), you may also be a candidate.

VBAC may also be appropriate if you’re pregnant with twins, previously had one low transverse C-section, and are otherwise appropriate for a twin vaginal delivery.

Your baby’s position in the womb and their health also determine if a VBAC is appropriate. Sarasota OB/GYN Associates may not be able to evaluate these factors until very close to delivery.

When is a vaginal birth after cesarean section not recommended?

You may not be eligible for a VBAC if you’ve had:

  • A prior high vertical uterine incision
  • A prior uterine rupture
  • Certain types of uterine surgery, like fibroid removal

If you’ve had more than two prior C-sections or are pregnant with multiples, a VBAC is not recommended.

Is vaginal birth after cesarean section safe?

Most of the time, a vaginal birth after cesarean section is a very safe delivery option that results in fewer complications than elective C-sections.

Sarasota OB/GYN Associates can help you determine if it’s the right choice for you. If you do have a failed VBAC and end up requiring a C-section, you may end up with more complications than if you’d just had a C-section.

When weighing your delivery options, Sarasota OB/GYN Associates is available to answer all your questions and concerns. They want you to be fully informed when deciding on your birth plan.
